“Sonic Boom” is quite simply a tour de force from one of the most prolific Producers and Artists in the contemporary jazz format. Showcasing his top drawer playing on Tenor Sax, and various keyboards, along with his always superb arranging and production chops, Darren has delivered arguably his finest album to data as a solo artist. Containing a virtual treasure chest of music, Mr. Rahn has stepped into rarefied air with this album, which will only solidify his rightful place as a core artist in the genre. The songs range from his smash #1 Billboard Smooth Jazz Chart hit “D-Luxe,” to the current radio single “Funk Avenue.” A must listen is the playful romp “Altered Ego” which features a mind-blowing solo by Trombone virtuoso Robin Eubanks, as well as some serious riffing by Darren on Tenor. On the softer side, Darren’s impassioned playing graces “Losing You (for Wayman),” along with some tasty bass colors from former labelmate Julian Vaughn. A delicious surprise on the album is the uplifting “Sunday Soul.” Church is in session on this one, and the gospel vocal ensemble is as good as it gets. Darren’s heartfelt and inspiring playing on the track shows his deeply spiritual side, and is a blessing to hear. With something for everyone, “Sonic Boom” is sure to be a contender for album of the year.
